Midweek Scenester Picks: Slut River, Sextapes, Paperhead, Pale Hearts, and the LPL's Last Bash / Also, LFK's Masonic Temple Comes to Life!

Are you looking for a loud and arousing rock show to spice up a hot Wednesday night in LFK?  The Replay serves up a female-fronted Iowa punk band called Slut River with opener Sextapes.  We interviewed Rob from Sextapes recently (check it out here).  His even newer band, Pale Hearts,  takes the Replay stage on Thursday along with "psych wunderkinds" Paperhead from Trouble in Mind records.  Is it officially "Scary Manilow Week" in LFK?  Yes.

A perusal of Slut River's Bandcamp reveals song titles like "Stalker Retarded" and album covers that look like this:

And here's the odd and disturbing flier for tonight's show:

Not to be outdone by the kids and their rock and roll, the Lawrence Public Library adds $3 Free State beer and a solid indie lineup of Danny Pound and Hospital Ships to their annual Last Bash from 6:30-8:30 pm on Thursday outside the library.   With temps above 100+ (and even hotter on the asphalt), this may indeed be the Last Bash for a few of you, if you catch our meaning (Chip:  "We mean that several people are likely to die of heatstroke out there.").

Find more details via the LPL site here.

The big news in LFK today is that the Masonic Temple on Mass. Street (owned by Doug Compton, of course) is finally about to transform...into a church.  Yes, Compton has apparently turned things over to The Greenhouse Culture.  You can watch a video from the church here in which Jared walks around Mass. Street telling you his vision for the church, which involves "loud songs and long sermons."  At one point he says (or it sounds like he says) that he can "smell a generosity that makes us sweat" (??).   If they serve PBR, count us in!  But could we please make the sermons shorter?

Let's see what the LJ-World talkbackers are saying.

OneEye_Wilbur says:  "So when will pastor Jared get that organ in order? After all, there is a very good reason to use that building for a church and utilize the organ as a draw for downtown. But the so called leaders in this community don't have diddly squat for making anything downtown a destination, except shopping at some T shirt shops and eating at restaurants with pita bread served by waitstaff grungy looking."
