Behind the Scenes (Once More) of the mARTch Madness Art Tournament: Elite Eight Opening is Tonight

Sure, the Elite Eight is still a bit of a touchy subject in LFK, since KU didn't quite get there, but that's no reason to avoid tonight's Elite Eight mARTch Madness art opening at 1109 Gallery.  The remaining works will be trimmed down to eight at 7:00 pm and three members of the Cowgirl's Trainset gang will play an acoustic set at 7:30.  Plus, beer and wine ($3 donation).  The opening is from 5:00-9:00.  Visit the FB event page here.

In a strange twist, artists at this stage of the tourney are allowed to swap their original entry for another choice.  Too bad KU couldn't have put in a whole new team that we'd never seen before during the last five minutes of the Michigan game!

Here are three of the new pieces and our thoughts (as esteemed jury members) on their chances to succeed.

Chip:  "This new photo of Dennis and Sheryl  in a loving embrace amidst a trash-strewn, graffiti-covered wasteland is a perfect embodiment of that hoary cliche 'One man's trash is another man's treasure.'  Their love somehow elevates the backdrop into a place of unexpected beauty, a veritable paradise, an LFK Eden.  I predict this piece will win."

Richard:  "Leo Hayden's painting of Cowgirl's Trainset during a recent set at a burlesque show at Frank's seems to capture the band in mid-howl, suspending them forever in a moment of transcendent--dare we say orgasmic?--release.  Also, the backdrop reminds me a bit of a Twin Peaks dream sequence.  This piece is going to coast into the Final Four for sure."

Chip:  "This is a woman smoking.  Notice how she holds the garment around herself and her hair is unkempt.  She's obviously having a post-coital smoke. This piece gives me a boner and I voted for it."
